Fundraiser Launched for Legendary House Music Vocalist, Kathy Brown, Who is Fighting Stage 4 Cancer

The legendary house music vocalist, Kathy Brown, best known for her track ‘Joy’ and for being the voice of Soul Central’s ‘Strings Of Life (Stronger On My Own)’, was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer late last year. She has since been told that the cancer has spread to her brain, which required emergency treatment and has resulted in the singer undergoing a long course of radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

In light of the recent developments and the mounting costs of the treatment, Brown’s daughter Chanta Joyner has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with the medical costs and to help support the family.

On the GoFundMe page, Joyner wrote: “As the news is only just sinking in we are already facing the harsh reality of what this means for my mother – not only the physical and medical challenges but also the many financial ones. Like most artists who have devoted their careers to dance music, without being able to perform LIVE there’s little to no chance of earning an income.”

She added: “My mother has poured her heart and soul onto stages and dance floors all over the world for more than thirty years, and now she needs your love and support more than ever. My siblings and I are going to do everything we can to take care of her, but the costs we are facing with medical expenses and monthly bills is overwhelming.”

“My mom deserves the best care and comfort that money can buy,” I know that she has thousands of fans all over the world who adore her voice and her beautiful spirit. Please consider contributing to assist Kathy and get her through the weeks and months ahead.”

As mentioned by Chanta, Brown’s daughter, Kathy Brown has enjoyed more than thirty years of success in house music. Originally hailing from South Carolina, Brown found fame as lead singer of the chart-topping group ‘Praxis’ before launching her solo career where she has released and featured on dozens of house and club tracks over the course of her illustrious career. Resulting in Brown’s voice being one of the most iconic and recognised vocals in house music.

To aid fundraising efforts, Mark Knight’s label Toolroom will be releasing a charity single, due to drop on 19th January. The track ‘Turn Me Deeper’ is produced by Mark Knight himself, house music duo Wh0 and James Hurr and features Brown’s vocals.

You can get behind the fundraising efforts by purchasing the single, as well as donating what you can on the GoFundMe page HERE.

We, at Select, are deeply saddened by this news and send all our love, strength and well wishes to Kathy and her family.
